  • Before a few weeks ago, I’d never heard of Gregg Braden. After being asked if I’d be interested in covering his event here in Fort Collins, I did some minimal digging on him. Everywhere, I found the following photo of him:

    Photo copyright ©Gregg Braden

And I gathered that he’s a new-age science-y author and speaker guy. In the last couple months, I’ve found myself entrenched in the new thought / spiritual world, and so documenting a Gregg Braden event fits in.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned since being around the new thought / spiritual people, is to show up when and where you’re told to without asking questions or having specific expectations. And so, I showed up Friday morning when Leap! and Bella Spark interviewed Gregg on camera, and I showed up Friday evening when he did his talk at the Lincoln Center. The experience of meeting this man and listening to him speaking, and hearing his message renews my hope in the world, in humanity and in myself. I don’t need science to believe in love, but when a person has a scientifically researched statement for the beauty of love, and the amazing changes it can make… well, I’m hooked.

Having met Gregg, heard him laugh, and talk and crack jokes, I don’t think the photo of him used everywhere does him justice. He is so full of life, full of warmth and kindness… I would like people to see him the way I do.

I’ll soon be on a steady regimen of reading his books, and hopefully will have the opportunity to meet him again. Oh, and the gremlins in my computer? Well, once I started editing these photos, gremlins in my computer decided to turn it off randomly, every 10 minutes or so. Coincidence? I don’t know… but I’ve seen an entire web server go down when someone is about to give a powerful message, and I’ve heard it happen to others as well. I don’t get it, but it’s an interesting world…

  • Boudoir photo sessions are some of my favorite opportunities as a photographer. Something about working with a woman to help her feel beautiful, and then showing her the proof of that beauty makes such a huge difference in her life… I’m just honored and floored by comes out of it. For her and for me.

When I met Tiffany, she loved the idea of boudoir and really wanted some artful photos of her pregnancy. To make things easier for her, I packed up my equipment and met her at her house. We had music, a variety of outfit changes, and her own great furniture to work with… not to mention her cute and sweet partner!  Tiffany was a blast to work with – fun and upbeat, willing to try my crazy ideas and coming up with crazy ideas of her own.

After I sent Tiffany her photos, her reply to me simply said. “You are such an amazing photographer…I love these…so much fun”

And here’s where the crazy fun ideas came in…

Tiffany can rock it!  And one more of Tiffany and her man, cause really, what’s sexier than true love?

  • “The (photographic) negative is the equivalent of the composer’s score… and the print is the equivalent of the conductor’s performance.” — Ansel Adams

Many of my wedding photography clients ask if they will get their images on disk. My answer usually goes something like, “uh, yes… you’ll get unretouched files, but they’ll be color and exposure-corrected.” And I see in the bride’s eyes hope and confusion at the same time. So I’ve started bringing prints with me to show them what that all means.

Before the days of digital, professional photographers rarely gave negatives to their clients. A person hired a photographer for a portrait or event, and then ordered prints from that same photographer. The client didn’t worry about what the photographer did behind the scenes. And if a client did want the negatives, they were very expensive. The main reason for this is because the negative is just one factor in how the final print looks. As Ansel Adams said, it’s the score, and no professional photographer wants his score performed by a minimum wage employee at 1-hour Photo-Mat.

Now, we have digital photography, but the file that comes out of my camera is akin to that negative. And this is where my processing begins.

    Straight out of the Camera

Many point and shoot cameras automatically increase contrast and saturation, so that your photo looks more like what your eyes see. I’ve turned all those adjustments off in my camera, so my files, straight out of the camera, are a bit lack-luster. They might be a little dark, contrast is poor, color is a little flat. I like it that way… this means I have complete control over the performance now.

Basic color and Contrast Adjustments Made

This is what your photos will look like on your disk— it’s subtle, but the skin tone is correct and the contrast has been bumped a bit. While this photo will look just fine if you have it printed by Snapfish or Target, I recommend getting your prints through me so that I can give them thorough retouching.

    Thoroughly Retouched

In the retouching phase, I correct skin blemishes, eyeglass glare, and any other distractions. In the photo above, notice that I corrected the bride’s dress under her left arm. Furthermore, after retouching, I have color profiles established with the professional printers I use. This way, I know that photo print will not be a little red or a little blue… it will sparkling and perfect.

If you want a black and white print, the conversion is not as simple as clicking “desaturate” in Photoshop. Our eyes have a tendency to enhance certain colors, often greens, over others, so I manipulate the individual colors in the photo to make a black and white look sharp and have the proper contrast.

Artful processing with Texture and border

Lastly, I can create true works of art with your photos with color effects, textures and borders.  Images processed this way tend to look edgier and trendier. I wouldn’t recommend this for an album that you expect to stand the test of time. But I think it’s a fun way to display some photos hanging in your home.

I hope this post demystifies some photographer-speak for you, and gives you some insight into what I do after I get home from your wedding with cards full of images. Feel free to email me if you have any questions, or better yet ask in the comments. I promise to answer!

  • When you need a service—a new dentist, hair stylist, veterinarian— how do you find a good one? The Right One? For me, I ask my friends first. An endorsement from a friend of mine is the best. But, what if you don’t have anyone to ask, like when I first moved to Fort Collins from New York? Well, then I just look around websites to find businesses I think I can trust. And I’ve noticed that I go by the photos. I picked a dermatologist just because I got a good feeling when I saw her picture on her website.

During the years that I worked in advertising, every real estate agent needed his or her photo on everything. Business cards, newspaper ads, brochures… everything. They all said that they simply get a better response when people can see their faces. And it’s not about looking a certain way or fitting into any definition of “attractive.” It’s about making a connection.

Ever notice that books have author photos in them? Why do you think that is?

And so how much do you think the right head shot is worth for your business? And since the name of the game is “connection,” then the right headshot is one where you look authentic, personable and approachable. The days of the stuffy studio portrait are over. This not to say that the right head shot can’t be done in a studio, but it certainly can’t be done the way a studio portrait comes to mind. It can’t be done like a 5th grade school photo. And it has to be current. A head shot is not authentic it doesn’t look like you today. Especially with this incredibly exciting explosion of social media. If you’re a fun person, and that’s why people should hire you to do whatever it is you, then your photo should feel fun. You should look like you’re having fun in that photo. But if you are uncomfortable in your photo, how do you think a Twitter or Facebook friend will relate? Or that new girl in town who’s looking for your service?

Head shots with me are a relaxed, fun experience. And these aren’t my words… After our session Dawn Todd (pictured above) said “Thank you, these look great!! thank you for making me feel so comfortable! it was painless and easy! ! ” And her photo reflects that. She’s had compliment after compliment on it. She loves it, she uses it on all her marketing materials, and it helps her business.

I know it’s hard to evaluate a photo of yourself subjectively. And your friends will probably tell you your photo is great because they love you. So, for the rest of January, I’m offering free head shot evaluations. Email your photo to me at photo@christinagressianu.com, and I’ll tell you what it conveys, how it feels. Also tell me what your business is. Knowing if you’re a party planner, or an accountant helps me evaluate better. If after my evaluation, you schedule a head shot session with me, I’ll give you 20% off, just because I think every business owner should have great photos of themselves and their staff.

I want to help you make the connection.

  • Ask any man what he finds sexy in a woman, and the answer is Confidence. (We’ve all read this in Cosmo, Glamour, etc. and no guy I’ve asked has disagreed… so this is legit info) And so it follows that the best Valentine’s day gift is YOU at your most Confident. Boudoir photography has that effect on you.

It’s not about losing 5 pounds, having younger skin or getting toned up. You, right now, are beautiful and I can prove it. I can prove it beyond a doubt, and then you’ll have no choice but to be Confident. Not to mention that a sexy little album of you is a nice little gift too.

With Valentine’s day coming up fast, I’m offering a Boudoir Marathon Month, through the rest of January. Complete your photo session by January 31st, and $280 gets you a 1-2 hour session with a couple outfit changes and a 5″ x 5″ sexy little album. And, half your session fee is a tax deductible donation to Hope Lives! Call 917-328-0664 or email me today to schedule your session since there are a limited number of spots!

  • A while back I posted a blog on how I got started in photography.  The thing is, though, that I love photography even more today than I did when I started.  I love it every single time I pick the camera up and point it at someone. I love it when I download and edit the photos.  And I really, really love it when I show people their photos and I get to see them beam with happiness!

I had one such opportunity last night. Hope Lives! made a slideshow of the photos I shot at their fundraising Gala and Fashion Show for breast cancer (see photographs below).  The women who had participated in the show all got together for the first viewing of this slideshow; it was the first time they’d seen the photos of themselves from that night.  It warmed my heart to see these women beaming, some teary eyed, as they watched the show of photos and were flooded with emotions and memories from that wonderful evening.

This is why I love photography.  The power of a photo to take someone back to a particular moment constantly amazes and humbles me.  I get to take a moment and make it tangible.  A photograph brings with it the power to bring up emotions reminiscent of beautiful memories, and to witness that is reward in itself.  But not only that, for someone like me, who is fascinated by people, relationships and time, photography is like people-watching, but with permission!  Thanks to photography, people lead me into their lives for an hour, an afternoon, a day…I get to be part of the family, laugh with the children, talk with Grandma, play with the dog… I get paid to live from my heart…how could I not be in love with that?

A few months ago I came across The Green Wedding Providers and thought, “hey, if anyone deserves a green certification, it’s me.” And this not something I talk about a whole lot, it’s just how I live, and so it may not be apparent to everyone how passionate I am about environmental issues.

When I filled out the application for the certification, it became very clear that being a “green photographer” isn’t so much about my practices as a photographer, but more about being green as a person. Most photographers shoot digital and offer online proofing. That right there is a huge step, saving tons of film, chemicals and paper that would require resources to produce and would end up in the waste stream. Many photographers even use recyclable batteries, which is a huge money and time saver since you’re not running around buying batteries before every gig. I’m thrilled that these things are fairly standard now.

The Green Wedding Provider certification dug deeper though, asking questions like:
How do I get around (by bike mostly, some bus, some carpool – car is the last resort)
    Do I compost (yes!)
Do I grow food in a garden (yes)
What kind of chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides do I use in the garden? (none, compost is the best fertilizer)
Do I source green energy (it’s so easy to sign up for wind electricity, and it costs me like $2 / month more)
How do I dispose of my spent electronics? (sell them, donate them, take them to an e-waste recycling facility)
What kind of cleaning supplies do I use? (Mrs. Meyers or Dr. Bronners when vinegar and baking soda don’t cut it)
How do I conserve water? (we have a low-flow shower head and faucets, and we water the garden with a drip system)

Etc, etc… and they didn’t ask, but I told them anyway… that I’m vegan, and have been for over 4 years.  More than a tree hugger, I’m a tree lover. You might find me admiring them as I was in this photo.

  • Saturday night at the Fort Collins Hilton, 400 or so people came to watch a fashion show that was less about the clothing and totally about the models. All of the models were beautiful, strong, amazing breast cancer survivors. The 400 people came out this evening to support them, and the wonderful organization that is Hope Lives! The evening started off with a cocktail hour featuring yummy pink champagne and a silent auction.

    gala_01

I got a quick shot of Lydia Dody, who founded Hope Lives after her own recovery from breast cancer. I think she’s just gorgeous!

    gala_02

After cocktail hour, there was a lively Live Auction, an awards ceremony, and finally… the fashion show!

    gala_03

The show was kicked off by Kim Shore in that fabulous violet gown, and Bonnie McBride-Berry in her kicky skirt and smart red jacket.

    gala_04

Another shot of Bonnie, and Anne Cagen was next!

    gala_05

Rose Marie Studer, in this stunning teal gown is a personal friend of mine. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house, and when Rose Marie came out I was relying on the ole’ auto-focus because I got all teary-eyed too.

    gala_06

Elana Serrano and Jeanne Brien came out and had an absolute blast on stage!

gala_07Jan Rachid danced on stage like a person truly celebrating life. Robin Tujillo was a bit more reserved, but clearly glowing and thrilled to be there.

gala_08Jessica Adair was the youngest of the survivors to grace the stage. So she and Dana Dunlap were proud to show off their guns!

gala_11Jennifer Entner and Shari Robinson came on stage, almost floating.

gala_10And lastly, we had Julie Jones, Marylin Jones, and Patricia Moore. Julie and Marylin are a mother / daughter survival team. Talk about inspiration!

You can read more about these fantastic women, and what they have to say at Style Magazine.

I’ve blogged about Hope Lives! before, and I’m still running my fund raiser for them. What I love so much about Hope Lives! is that it’s a local organization dedicated to helping women around me in very tangible ways. The large research organizations have their place, but it’s hard for me to LOVE them the way I do Hope Lives!

I look forward to working with them more and huge thanks to all the people who came out that night to support and cheer on the models.

  • Many years before I photographed my first wedding, I shot families and children in a style I simply called un-stuffy, un-studio. In 2002, my good friends had a baby and asked me if I could go to the park with them and take some pictures of their little girl. Little did I know that this would become something called “lifestyle portraiture” as I started doing it for them regularly, and then do it for their friends. Now that baby girl is 7 years old, has a little sister, and lives in North Carolina. My friends fly me there once a year to go to the park with them, or hang out in the back yard, and take pictures.

When is the last time you had a good photo taken with the ones you love? Your kids, spouse, family and pets. How many good photos do you have of your children? Photos other than the school pictures where he or she was posed uncomfortably and smiling nervously?

    portrait_1

    portrait_3

The difference is that I am a photojournalist. I don’t pose you or your children, and I don’t make them smile for me. It’s the same for couples, and families and pets. We just go somewhere pretty, and I kinda tell you where the good light is. And then you play. I have my big lens, 40 feet away, and by the time everyone is tired out you have a wonderful memory of playing with your kids, I have gorgeous photos for you to frame, hang, email, put on your cell phone, Facebook and holiday cards. Photos for your heart to cherish.

    holiday family photo cards

With the holidays sneaking up on us faster than we realize, now is the perfect time to schedule a Portrait Session for the coming weeks. Any session that takes place before December 1st will include 25 custom photo cards. You’ll get your cards about 1 week after you select the photos and the design. I have card designs ranging from elegant, religious, traditional to fun, spunky, colorful and modern. Call me at 917-328-0664 or email me to book your session today! (I’m in Fort Collins, but still quite attached to my NYC area code)

  • Last Thursday I got a phone call from Ross Bothwell of Elegant Images and Photographs, looking for a very last-minute second photographer, for a wedding the next day.  I didn’t have plans, and I love weddings, so sure!

Ashley and Haven’s lovely wedding was at the Lionscrest Manor in Lyons, Colorado.  When I walked into the room where the bride and bridesmaids were getting ready, I said hello and asked for Ashley. When she turned and said “oh, that’s me” I had a moment of shock at how beautiful she was. Strikingly beautiful, and calm and happy.

    Lionscrest Manor Wedding

I had a blast being there with Ashley, her sisters, mom and friends getting ready, drinking champagne, adjusting hair and makeup and dresses. I have a ton of photos of Ashley doing whatever she’s doing, and being absolutely glamourous while doing it.

    Lionscrest Manor Wedding

Ross hung out and took pictures with the Haven and the guys, so I didn’t even meet them until after the ceremony. Instead I got to be with Ashley the whole time. Before the ceremony, she sat watching her guests arrive. One thing I loved about the Lionscrest Manor was the light in the bridal room. All these “getting ready” photos where shot using the available light in the room, thanks to this fabulous big window.

Even just peeking at the awaiting ceremony, Ashley is gorgeous!

The lawn at the Lionscrest offers a perfect backdrop of Colorado mountains for the ceremony.

It was an absolutely lovely wedding. Elegant, beautiful and fun. I had a great time shooting with Ross and a great time at the Lionscrest. And tomorrow, Ashley and Haven are off to warm and sunny West Palm Beach for their honeymoon!
